Tools for Student Collaboration (T4SC)

Abstract:  Learning is fun when it is social. In this session, participants will learn how to engage students in collaborative team-based learning in and out of the classroom using their computers and/or smart phones. The focus will be on Google drive (Text, Spreadsheet, Forms, Slides, Jamboards)), curation tools (Miro, Padlet, Wakelet), VoiceThread, Nearpod, Quizlet, Kahoot, Voki, Flipgrid, Vimeo, Screencast-o-matic, Canva and other tools that enhance student collaboration.

Weekly digital badges and a final certificate will be available for participants who complete the tasks.

Target audience:

  • English language teachers of every age group
  • Faculty and teacher training staff

Session objectives:

  • By the end of this session, participants will have learned about and practiced using audio, video, images, and text tools for student collaboration.
  • By the end of the session, participants will have used video recorders such as Vimeo, Screencast-o-matic, and Flipgrid, Google Drive (text, slides, forms, and sheets), Wakelet, Miro, and Padlet, and other tools such as Nearpod, Voki, Kahoot and Quizlet.
  • By the end of the session, participants will have created collaborative learning activities for their English language learners (ELL) in and out of the classroom.

Week 1: January 11-17

In week 1, participants will get acquainted with the each other, the moderator, the platform, and team up. They will introduce themselves by text, audio, and video using the recorders on the editor of the message areas and through Voki and discuss collaborative learning.

Week 2: January 18 - 24

In week 2, participants will learn to create, invite, and share a Google text doc. One person creates a Google doc and gives editing rights to the members of the team by adding their gmails to the "share" feature on the top right hand side of the doc. They will also reflect on the process of creating a Google Docs by answering the following questions using one of the following curation walls: Padlet wall, Miro, or Wakelet, Create a video screen sharing your curation wall and upload the MP4 to Youtube or vimeo

Week 3: January 25 - 31

In week 3, each team will choose a debate topic from the 50 topics and create team presentations but with only images and no text. They will create an account on Canva and create a collaborative group. One person will create the Google presentation slides and give editing rights to the team members by adding their gmails to the "share" feature on the top right hand side of the doc. They will reflect using Padlet, Miro, or Wakelet and use Screencast-o-maric or Vimeo to record the screen to create a video tutorial of their work.

Week 4: February 1 - 7

In week 4, you will collaborate on a Google form survey to gather information to gain feedback on the quality of your week 3 Google slide activity (your team chosen debate topic). Remember that your audience is not your team. The audience is those who view your Google slides. Make sure you include the link to your Google slide presentation in the description of the feedback form. One person should create a Google form and give collaborator rights to the team members by adding their gmails. They will create videos of their work and reflect on the tools and the process.

Week 5: February 8 - 14

Each team will organize a live meeting and give a live Kahoot and live Quizlet.

Reflect on the process of working in teams and on the tools using Flipgrid. Each team will collaborate and create a team Flipgrid group and create an activity for the team. They will answer the following questions and add more information if they wish.
